Star Recording, Inc.[]

Star Records was a major diversification move in the evolution of ABS-CBN from a broadcast media to a fully integrated entertainment company. It was incorporated in February 1995 and began operating commercially in September of the same year. In just a few months, the company managed to set up what has become the largest provincial sales and distribution network.

From the outset, Star Records embarked on its own artist and repertoire development. By December 1996, the company's artists roster had grown to some twenty local acts. Young as it is, the recording outfit has had a number of gold and multi-platinum albums to its credit: Handumanan, a piano anthology of immortal Cebuano songs by Bro. Marcial Sanson; debut albums of Lindsay Custodio in My First, Jamie Rivera in Once More, Geleen "Tootsie" Guevarra in Really Wanna Tell You, the soundtrack of Flames: The Movie, the latest album of Roselle Nava in On Higher Ground, the soundtrack of Labs Kita Okey Ka Lang?, and the star-studded Christmas album Sa Araw Ng Pasko.

In June 1997, Star Records concluded a distribution and licensing agreement with Rock Records of Taiwan, involving products from about 40 independent European and American labels. Albums by known international artists like Depeche Mode, Erasure, Nick Cave, Richard Clayderman and Kenny Rogers, have been released under this deal. Moreover, Star Records continuously developed its own labels like: Star which features more established artists; Istilo which features young upcoming artists; Ear Stub which features rock and alternative artists; Budget Music which delivers cover versions and multiplexes; Bituen Ti Amianan which caters to the regional (northern) segment of the market and the latest Saucy Music which features mass-based artists. Star Records is catering to a larger segment of society, henceforth, improving the outfit's market profile.

As the company matures, and as its marketing and A & R teams gain experience, there is no doubt Star Records would surely make it big as a recording company in the years ahead.
